The NAIA fourth-ranked Raiders improved to 7-4 with their sixth consecutive win and notched the school’s 12th win against an NCAA Division I program since 1995. "We go head-to-head a lot with Portland State for recruits, so it’s always nice to beat them," said SOU head coach Mike Ritchey. Top-ranked senior Wes Balensifer began the dual with a third-period match termination against Eric Mustoe and upped his record to 36-2 in the 285-pound clash. The Vikings (1-10), who never led, trailed only 9-7 after four bouts, but SOU rattled off six straight, including bonus points from Colin Murphy (149), Brian Wilson (165), Rick Story (174), David O’Brien (184) and Grant Thompson (197). Advertisement Ritchey said Murphy’s major decision of Eddie Dahlen was a turning point. "That kind of broke their spirit a little bit, I think," said Ritchey, noting Dahlen defeated Murphy in the Best of the West Open in Medford on Nov. 22. "To avenge that loss was nice." Men’s Basketball WARNER PACIFIC 85, SOUTHERN OREGON 84, OT — At Portland, Warner Pacific guard Joe Hoover nailed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to lift the Knights to an overtime stunner. The clutch shot, which dimmed Raider regular-season Cascade Conference hopes, spoiled the herocis of sophomore guard Steve Farley, who canned a 3-pointer with one second left in regulation that forced overtime at 74-all. SOU (16-13, 11-4) staked an 84-82 lead with 12 seconds left in the extra frame when sophomore guard Peter Nelson, who had stolen a Knight inbounds pass, converted the second half of a double- bonus foul situation. Hoover spurred WPC’s biggest win of the season with 45 points — the fourth-highest individual scoring output in conference history. Women’s Basketball WARNER PACIFIC 83, SOUTHERN OREGON 59 — At Portland, Southern Oregon mixed cold shooting with poor rebounding in an 83-59 Cascade Conference setback at Warner Pacific. The eighth-place Raiders (7-15, 6-9) had a two-game win streak snapped after digging a 41-25 halftime hole and shooting just 26 percent for the game (17 of 65). Meanwhile, the third-place Knights (15-10, 10-4) shot 49.2 percent from the floor and dominated the boards by a 54-37 margin. SOU was paced by junior guard Camille Porter’s 15 points, although she missed 15 of 19 shots. Junior forward Robyn Ward sprang for nine points and eight rebounds. WPC received a game-high 22 points from forward Becky VanTine, who converted all nine of her shot attempts.
