Oregon Legislature roundup: What got done and what didn't in Salem ... Drowning claimed man in Lost Creek; evidence of fire on boat ... LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, March 3 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 3, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Mar. 3, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Everyone else votes In response to Scott Morgan's letter, where he advocates not voting as a solution to the dilemma of not agreeing completely with any candidate: guess what? Everyone else will vote (hopefully) and he will be absolved of the responsibility. But then again, this will give him no right to complain when things turn out not to his liking! No vote equals a vote by omission. He is handing the choice to others. By the way, I do agree that prayers are needed! Katharine Lang Ashland Thou shalt not steal The Democrat-dominated Legislature again turns its agenda against freedom-loving, hard-working, low-skilled Oregonians, while obeying their special-interest supporters. The latest attack against the laws of economics, sound reason, empirical knowledge and morality is a mandated increase in the minimum wage. The solons of Salem desire total power and control over everything, even over others' money, although they have no right to it. The Democrats, exhibiting vast ignorance of, or rejecting outright, the laws of economics, want to steal money from businesses and redistribute it to a favored group, viz., those it feels are not paid enough according to the skills individuals possess and/or the productivity they exercise. The businesses' choices: They can install point-of-sale computers which the customers use to order and pay. Retain only the most productive employees. Or close. All result in job losses. Seattle's 2015 minimum wage increase resulted in a net loss of 11,000 jobs in nine months according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of unemployed rose by 5,000 and the city's unemployment rate increased 1 percent. When the economics-challenged Democrats tell you, "It won't happen here! We know better!" Don't believe them! They are counting on your ignorance of economics. Mitchell Rofter Medford Trump's arrogance Christians, do you truly believe that God will raise up America while the braggart Donald “The Great I Am” Trump is the elected leader? We are told that pride is the great sin. It was pride that caused God to cast Lucifer from his side and damn him forever, even as pride was the cause of mankind’s downfall in the Garden of Eden. Heedlessly, Trump arrogates to himself those things that he should not: “For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?" — 1 Cor 4:7. C.S. Lewis believed, "In God you come up against something that is in every respect immeasurably superior to yourself. Unless you know God as that — and, therefore, know yourself as nothing in comparison — you do not know God at all. As long as you are proud, you cannot know God.” In sweet counterbalance, Saint Augustine wrote, "Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues, hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance.” — wisdom wasted on Trump.
