North Medford ekes out an SOC split ASHLAND Scoring opportunities were few and far between Tuesday afternoon in a Southern Oregon Conference softball twin bill between North Medford and Ashland. The Black Tornado took advantage of what little opportunity there was, however, as North swept the Grizzlies, 2-1 and 5-2. "It was just good pitching on both sides all day," said Ashland coach Rich Beugli. "There were some defensive miscues that led to most of the scoring." Norths Steph Coe struck out eight in Game 1 but allowed three of Ashlands five hits in the seventh inning as the Grizzlies attempted a rally. Coe also had to come on in relief of Keri Sevano in the nightcap as the Grizzlies once again waited for the seventh inning to start their scoring. Megan Beugli allowed only eight hits in the doubleheader for Ashland but still was pinned with both losses after going the distance in each game for the Grizz (4-6, 1-3 SOC). In the opener, North scored its two runs in the sixth after Beth Morrill hit a leadoff triple and subsequently scored on a passed ball. Coe hit into a fielders choice to score Tai Kinney with what would become the game-winner. Ashland rallied in the seventh as Jenna Graven singled and advanced to third on Beuglis double. After an RBI single by Cat Clason, Coe halted the threat with two strikeouts. The Tornado scored four runs in the sixth to break open Game 2, with Ashland errors and a Coe triple doing most of the damage. Once again, the Grizz rallied in the seventh, scoring two runs off Sevano with an RBI by Steph Hargis and a fielders choice by Lindsay Calvo.
