A Grants Pass woman has been charged with promoting prostitution after Medford police detectives caught her and another woman Thursday in an Internet sting. According to a probable cause affidavit written by Detective Jim Williams, police found 28-year-old Melissa Beth Cranmer through an advertisement on Backpage.com offering "early riser special(s)." Cranmer, who identified herself as "Kaitlyn," told Williams she and her friend "Bella" were only offering quickies, and charging $120 per sex act. When police contacted them at their room at the Ramada Inn on Biddle Road, Williams wrote, the women said they'd been in Medford on two different days and had seen 10-12 customers. According to the affidavit, 30-year-old "Bella" told officers that she'd known of Cranmer's past in the sex industry and had asked her for help posting the advertisements. While prostitution itself is only a Class A misdemeanor in Oregon, promoting prostitution — defined as instituting, aiding or facilitating an act of prostitution — is a Class C felony. Cranmer, who has a prior conviction in Jackson County for conspiracy to commit a Class B felony, was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on charges of promoting prostitution, prostitution and a parole violation. She's being held without bail because of the parole violation.
