COMEDY Kathleen Madigan to perform at the Craterian When comedian Kathleen Madigan isn't telling hilarious stories about her family or working on the road, she likes to golf with friends and fellow comics Lewis Black and Ron White. According to a story in the Las Vegas Review, one of her best anecdotes is when Black helicoptered an iron into alligator habitat off a course in Florida and threatened to go looking for it. “Really?” Madigan was quoted. “You’re afraid of squirrels, but you’re going in there where there are big signs that say, ‘Alligator Habitat, Do Not Enter?’ … I’ll turn my phone on, and I’ll film it, and I’ll make a billion dollars, because I’ll have the ‘Lewis Black Gets Eaten By An Alligator’ video.” Then there was the time Madigan and Black were touring together and decided to go golfing on a spring day in Ireland. When the two comedians pulled up to the course, "it was about 48 degrees with sideways rain — real rain, not a nice Irish mist," Madigan said. When Madigan saw golfers in rain suits and declared she wasn't doing it, Black said, "This is why I love golfing with a woman. I don't want to do it, either. But if I was with men, they would call me a pansy and make me play in this '----'." Madigan will kick off Craterian Performances' 2014-2015 performing arts season with her observational humor at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford. Tickets cost $22, $25 or $28 and can be purchased at the box office, 16 S. Bartlett St., online at www.craterian.org or by calling 541-779-3000. Madigan has a reputation as a comic's comic — someone who is funny to audiences and to other comedians. "I'm a topical comedian," she says. "I talk about whatever's going on, my family or things that have happened. My comedy is more like a conversation with the lady at the end of the bar. "I just want to tell jokes," she says. "I didn't start doing open mics to become an actor on a sitcom. That's never crossed my mind. I just like to tell jokes for an hour or so and laugh. For a few of us working today, this was our goal. Can't you ever have a goal, reach it and then enjoy it? This society is being driven by Type A lunatics that tell you to set more goals. No, you don't have to. Have a seat and enjoy the fact that you're here." Madigan headlines a couple of times a year at The Mirage in Las Vegas and has made appearances on every nighttime talk show on every network, along with the syndicated "Bob and Tom Show." Her third hour-long special, "Madigan Again," premiered in 2013 on Netflix, and iTunes named it one of the best comedy albums of the year. It's now available on CD and DVD. She has four earlier CDs and two DVDs to her credit, and she's starred in two HBO specials and three Comedy Central specials. During her 25-year career, she's won the American Comedy Award and Las Vegas Comedy Festival's Phyllis Diller Award for best female comedian. Madigan's toured with her pal Black and the late Robin Williams — along with bands Kid Rock, the Zac Brown Band and others — for USO tours. "U.S. troops are the best crowds ever," she says. "There's no one happier to see a show than a soldier sitting on a base in Iraq or Afghanistan. I've done USO shows at bases in the U.S., too. But the further the troops are from home, the more they appreciate it."
