The first-round game. Grants Pass scored two times in the first inning and pitcher Jessica Morton made the lead stand as the Cavers ended the Wolves’ season. Advertisement Grants Pass (19-8), the No. 4 team out of the Southern Oregon Conference, moves on to host Clackamas, which defeated Beaverton 1-0, in a second-round contest Wednesday. Morton went the distance, striking out 10 while allowing only three hits. The Cavers managed just three hits as well, but the two-run first-inning helped erase early game jitters. "Without a doubt, that set the tone," said Grants Pass coach Clay Rounsaville. "We’ve had trouble scoring runs for Jessica in the past, so getting her a lead early helped her relax a little I think." Jenny Austin reached on an error to start the game for the Cavers and came around to score on Ashley Bellum’s double. Bellum, who moved to third on the throw to the plate, scored one batter later on Justine Cerda’s groundout. Tualatin answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning but couldn’t muster the tying run against Morton. "We just start playing better and better and better," said Rounsaville of his team’s play of late. "I told them that if we get to the playoffs, we’d be a team not to be taken lightly." Todd walked two batters and only struck out one but didn’t allow a runner past first while her defense did the rest. The Comets (18-8) got the leadoff runner on in the first inning, but a snared line drive turned into a double play and erased the threat. Crater didn’t reach base again until the seventh. South Salem, which moves on to face Southridge, an 8-6 winner over Churchill, on Wednesday, scored all three runs in the first inning behind three hits and two walks off starter Janelle Cristofaro.
