Crater wrestlers finish second By KRIS HENRY FRESNO, Calif. -- One debatable move kept Crater from winning the 20-team Clovis West Shootout wrestling tournament on Saturday. The Comets dominated the action in 4-of-5 matchups Saturday, only to have their only close call come back to haunt them in the final standings. In a decision Crater coach Greg Haga called "questionable," junior Scott Toney was called for an illegal slam in his match with a Clovis wrestler. Instead of continuing the match Toney was already dominating, the Clovis wrestler was awarded an injury default for six points. With the point swing, Clovis eventually won the dual match, 28-27. Crater won its other four matches on the day, and won 9-of-10 dual matches in the tourney. The Comets topped Exeter (58-9), Kurman (68-0), Clovis West (54-9) and Buchanan (48-18) on Saturday. Calvary Chapel of Anaheim, Calif., gained the tournament's overall championship after posting a perfect 10-0 record. Crater finished a close second at 9-1. Had the injury default not been awarded, Crater would have won the title thanks to its edge in team points. Despite the setback, Haga said he was pleased with his team's performance at the tourney. "It's nice wrestling people that we don't see all the time," Haga said. "It's not always bad losing. It motivates you to regroup and makes you hungry to win again." For their efforts, the Comets earned five of the 14 spots on the 20-team all-tournament lineup. Earning the coveted spots were Justin Godley at 135 pounds, Joe Green at 140, Shane Webster at 152, Matt Lee at 160 and Mike Whitehead at 189. Godley, Green and Lee each posted 10-0 records in the tourney, while Webster and Whitehead were 9-0. Today's Sports Index Mail Tribune Copyright The Mail Tribune 1998, Medford,
