Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend May 28, 2005 Since You Asked There’s a right way to display our flag I live in Medford and there is a place that I see every day on the way home from work that gets to me. The first thing is that their flags are touching the ground; the second is that they are out all night without lighting; the third is that their watering system is allowed to drench them (they are not all-weather flags). It is as if the flags have been set out and neglected. I was raised to respect the American flag. You are to treat it with uppermost respect, as if it were a living thing. It bothers me that people are ignorant of what the flag means and how to show it off. There is something that people can read to further their knowledge. Please read the U.S. Code, Title 36 — Patriotic Societies and Observances, Chapter 10 — Patriotic Customs. And yes, they are codified into federal law — the U.S. Code. We’re not sure exactly what punishment if any is called for, other than the potential shame inflicted by patriotic neighbors. That’s enough to make most folks whip themselves into shape. We address this at a perfect time just as we enter the summer flag season. Memorial Day Weekend is one time when all Americans are asked to fly the flag.
