Our View: Let Medford voters decide on marijuana sales ... Reopening of the Siskiyou Line means trucking companies will take a hit ... SINCE YOU ASKED Since You Asked: Soccer team names can get long — really long Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jun. 1, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 1, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News How did it come to be that soccer teams have such unusual names? I read about Rogue Valley Timbers 97B Adrenaline, the Rush Steelheaders, Cascade Rush FC and AC Samoa Intensity. There must be some good reason they can’t be just Bears, Cardinals or Giants. What's the story behind these names? — Ed N., Medford Ed, you must have spotted those names while checking on the annual Rogue Memorial Challenge tournament, held over Memorial Day weekend in the Medford area. We saw them, too, and wondered as well, so turned to a guy who would know: Kevin Primerano, director of coaching for the Rogue Valley Timbers Soccer Club (formerly the Rogue Valley Soccer Club). He said some of the longer names, for instance the aforementioned Rogue Valley Timbers 97B Adrenaline, are conglomerations of age, gender, club and team name. In the case of the Adrenaline, Rogue Valley Timbers is the club name, "97" refers to the age of the player based roughly on birth year, "B" refers to boys and Adrenaline is the name parents yell on the sidelines. It can get more complicated with the local Timbers teams: When there's more than one team at an age level, the "A" team is called Red and the "B" team is called White. Primerano coaches a team named the Rogue Valley Timbers 96G Red. (And congrats to those girls, who not only won the Memorial Challenge but also won the state tournament for club teams earlier this month.) The entire club uses the same naming protocol, for consistency's sake, he says. Names of teams from elsewhere can include initials such as FC, for Football Club, or AC, for Athletic Club. There are more unusual team names, Ed. There's a soccer team in Wales, called Llanfairpwll FC. Their real name is Clwb Pel Droed Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch FC — named after their Welsh hometown. We're not making that up.
