Officials say the scrub jay, found Aug. 12 west of the city, was tested at the Oregon State University Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratory in Corvallis. Three groups of mosquitos trapped Aug. 18 outside Eagle Point and Talent also tested positive for the virus. "We've seen the virus earlier this year," district biologist James Lunders says. Six mosquito groups, or "pools," collected in Jackson County had previously tested positive for the virus, along with a scrub jay found July 20 in northeast Medford. "At this time, year to date, we are actually behind (last year's numbers)," Lunders says. Officials say they've stepped up mosquito control measures since the discovery. "We're talking about insects that can go from eggs to adults in days," Lunders says. West Nile, originally isolated in Uganda in 1937, first appeared in the United States in 1999 and has since spread throughout the country. The Centers for Disease Control reported that as of Aug. 11, West Nile infections had been reported in 45 states this year. In Oregon, the virus been confirmed in Baker, Umatilla, Union, Malheur, Morrow, Wallowa and Jackson counties. Health officials say most people infected with the virus don't become sick, but some may develop mild flu-like symptoms, including fever, headache, body aches and occasionally swollen lymph glands or a rash. In rare cases, it can cause inflammation of the brain. People older than 50 and those with diabetes, high blood pressure or immune-compromising conditions are considered to be most at risk. Health officials say anybody with severe or unusual headaches should seek medical care as soon as possible. Authorities are asking anybody who notices sick or recently deceased crows, ravens, hawks, owls or robins to call the district offices at 541-826-2199 so the birds can be picked up for testing.
