It seems the questions asked of your predecessors are about the same as you get now. Thought it might be of interest to you. — Juanita M., Medford Holy Toledo, Juanita. You unearthed one of Since You Asked’s predecessor columns, known then as "I’d Like To Know." That was May 7, 1972, when the concerns were, as you said, much like today. The three questions asked in that day’s column, slightly abbreviated here, were: Why are orchardists allowed to use smoke-billowing smudge pots? (they kept freezing damage from spring blooms by creating convection currents; they’re rarely used now and burn cleaner fuels when they are); Is a peek-a-poo a registered breed? (a mix of Pekingese and poodle, it was not); and When was Daylight Savings Time adopted in Oregon? (in 1962, and like everything else in Oregon, it was put to a public vote). Of course our longtime readers will remember earlier predecessors such as "You Had to Ask," "What The?!?" and the poignant but ill-fated "Why?" And it all started with "What is dropsy and should I be worried?," which lasted just one week for lack of enough material to run more than once. We’re charging ahead in the new millennium holding steadfast to the Since You Asked banner. We’ve added "Since WE Asked," to the Sunday paper, but what’s next? "Son/Bride/Third Cousin of Since You Asked"? Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O. Box 1108, Medford, OR 97501; by fax to 541-776-4376; or by e-mail to [email protected] .
