February 06. 2016 9:46AM Update: Police identify Seaside officer killed in Friday night shooting Goodding A Seaside police officer was shot and killed Friday night, and the suspect was also shot and killed, according to Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis. The policeman was 39-year-old Sgt. Jason Goodding, a 13-year veteran of the department who is survived by his wife and two daughters, Marquis said at a Saturday morning news conference. The suspect was identified as Phillip Ferry, 55, from Seaside. According to OSP, Ferry, who was known by the officers to have a warrant for his arrest, was walking down Broadway about 9:30 p.m. When Sgt. Goodding and the other officer attempted to arrest Ferry, the man resisted arrest and the other officer shot him with a Taser. Ferry fired a shot and struck Goodding. The other Seaside police officer returned fire and shot Ferry, police said. The Daily Astorian reported that the officer died at Seaside Providence Hospital. The shooting reportedly occurred outside the Pig ’N Pancake in downtown Seaside. Marquis said it appears that the fatal shooting of the suspect was justified. Seaside is a resort town of about 6,500 people on the northern Oregon coast. Goodding is survived by his wife and school-aged children, according to an OSP news release. He graduated from Sherwood High School and he earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Portland State University. Goodding was hired with Seaside Police Department in April of 2003. During his tenure he worked as a patrol officer, detective and a patrol sergeant.
