Illinois Valley upends fifth-ranked Mazama CAVE JUNCTION - Illinois Valley has become accustomed to overtime games. The Cougars' 66-65 overtime victory over fifth-ranked Mazama Friday in Skyline Conference boys basketball was IV's fourth extra-period victory in its last five games. Junior guard Tyler Mikels' two free throws with 40 seconds remaining in overtime proved to be the difference. "We showed a lot of patience and composure down the stretch," Illinois Valley coach Jeff Brimhall said. Levell Hesia scored a game-high 27 points for Mazama, with 19 coming in the first half. Brimhall was pleased with the job done by Justin Graven in defending the Mazama high-scoring guard. "Hesia can almost score at will," said Brimhall, "but Justin Graven played good defense on him. We tried to put a lot of pressure on Hesia and we gave Justin a lot of help. The key was our help defense." Hesia sank a 3-pointer to give Mazama (9-2, 2-1 Skyline) a 60-57 margin with 11 seconds left in regulation, then Graven connected on a trey to send the game into overtime. Senior forward Daniel Houston paced the Cougars with 24 points and Graven chipped in 20. Mikels had a team-high 12 rebounds and Houston added 10. JV score - Mazama 62, Illinois Valley 54. HIDDEN VALLEY 52, PHOENIX 49 - At Phoenix, Brock Richards scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as Hidden Valley slipped past Phoenix. The Pirates held a five-point lead in the fourth quarter but were outscored 10-2 down the stretch. Richards, a 6-foot-5 junior, gave the Mustangs (4-9, 2-1 Skyline) the lead for good with just under two minutes to play on an offensive putback off a missed free throw. Brady Rhodes paced the Pirates' offense with 17 points and eight rebounds. Meadow Lacey had a team-high 11 boards for Phoenix (5-7, 1-1). ROGUE RIVER 74, HENLEY 49 - At Rogue River, senior guard Derrick Schoner missed his first six shots, then made 10 of his next 17 in erupting for a career-high 30 points to power Rogue River. The Chieftains (10-2 overall, 3-0 Skyline Conference) were tied with Henley (1-11, 0-3) at 12-all after the first quarter, but Schoner scored 12 points in the second to push Rogue River to a 30-21 halftime edge. Pushing the ball up the court even after Henley baskets, the Chieftains rolled to 26 third-quarter points to put the game away at 56-31 entering the fourth. Senior post Jason Luchterhand had another impressive outing for Rogue River, tallying 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
