Freshman goalkeeper stops Phoenix PHOENIX � The Phoenix Pirates put a lot of pressure on Skyline Conference power North Valley Saturday, but freshman goalie Karyn Allen saved the day for the Knights. Allen registered nine saves and Malloree Enoch scored two goals to lead North Valley to a 3-2 victory at Hagler-James Park. "She had nine very clean saves and controlled their defense in other ways," Phoenix coach John Doty said of Allen. "She came off her line and forced us to take shots that went wide. She�s a heck of a goalie." Phoenix freshman Sarah Keiffer took a header pass from Chelsi Clark and scored her second goal in the 78th minute to trim North Valley�s lead to 3-2. The Pirates had two good shots in the final two minutes to tie the match, including a strong header to the far post by Helen Shorland. But Allen rebuffed them both. "She (Allen) took a huge sliding step, got both hands on the ball and controlled it," Doty said. Enoch scored on a breakaway in the 20th minute for the game�s first goal, and Andee Trader blasted home a shot from 6 yards out to give North Valley a 2-0 advantage in the 31st minute. Keiffer scored in the 34th minute after taking a through pass from Shorland, cutting Phoenix�s halftime deficit to 2-1. But Enoch scored unassisted in the 59th minute to give the Knights a much-needed insurance goal. Along with Allen, North Valley got a fine defensive performance from sophomore sweeper Galina Vial. Phoenix had a 33-15 advantage in shots on goal. North Valley remained unbeaten in Skyline play at 4-0 with the win, while Phoenix dropped to 2-2 in conference play and 4-5-1 overall. ST. MARY�S 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 � At Cave Junction, sophomore Emily Smith had two goals to lead the Crusaders to a District 6 victory. Smith�s goals came in the 10th and 12th minutes of the first half. Junior Nellie Barnard rounded out St. Mary�s scoring with a second-half goal. St. Mary�s, 4-1 in District 6, plays Mazama at home Tuesday. MAZAMA 2, ROGUE RIVER 0 � At Klamath Falls, the Vikings emerged from a 0-0 halftime deadlock to win the District 6 match. Kay Ortega scored at the 60th minute for Mazama. Then, with only three minutes left, Marcy Burk added an insurance goal. Rogue River goalie Jenny Harryman had a fine game for the Chieftains. SOC SOUTH MEDFORD 3, ROSEBURG 0 � At Fichtner-Mainwaring Park, the Panthers employed an outstanding defensive performance in the conference win. The Panther defense held Rachel Stribling, Roseburg�s all-time goal leader, to one shot on goal. Senior Emily Perttu gave the Panthers, 4-1 in the SOC, a 1-0 lead off a corner kick by Heather Frigaard three minutes and thirty seconds into the game. Erin Reno and Colleen Salisbury each had a goal in the second half. Roseburg (5-6-1, 2-3 SOC) had seven shots on goal. NORTH MEDFORD 2, EAGLE POINT 0 � Emily Schuler and Julie Elbon scored two late second-half goals within five minutes of each other to lead North Medford. The Black Tornado defense held Eagle Point without a shot on goal to improve to 4-1 in SOC play. ASHLAND 3, CRATER 2 � At Ashland, Lindsey Huyett scored off an assist by Hannah Seltzer with 20 minutes remaining to break a 2-2 tie and lift Ashland to the hard-fought victory. Huyett led the Grizzlies with two goals while Seltzer also added a goal. Freshmen Sarah LaFontaine and Kassidy Reina connected for the Comets off assists from Megan Confer. The loss dropped the Comets to 1-4 in the SOC and 7-5 overall. Ashland improved to 1-4 in conference play. KLAMATH UNION 5, GRANTS PASS 0 � At Grants Pass, Sam Gilbert scored three goals to lead Klamath Union. Sarah Davidson and Brandy Bochi also added goals as the Pelicans improved to 5-0 in conference play. Grants Pass fell to 3-2.
