The International Trouters Society will hold its second annual "16 over/under" trout-fishing derby beginning at 9 a.m. at Lost Creek Lake off Highway 62 about 32 miles north of Medford. The tournament is free, with several prizes available for entrants. The derby is the brainchild of the ITS’s founder, Dave Nadler of Medford, as a method of creating a fun way for Jackson County’s almost 30,000 kids enrolled in school to usher in their week-long spring break. The first trout more than 16 inches long caught and registered by any angler under 16 years of age wins the grand prize of a steelhead rod/reel combination. First-, second- and third-place finishers also will receive prizes. Advertisement The winning fish must be registered at "Trout Central" at Takelma Park along the lake’s northwest side near Lost Creek dam. The fish must be fresh and caught after 9 a.m. Saturday. The contest will conclude at 4 p.m. If no trout more than 16 inches long is caught by 4 p.m., then only the first through third places will be awarded. Participants can register only one trout in the derby. Kids looking for trout but not prizes as a way to kick off spring break can head to the Denman Wildlife Area for a special week of trout fishing. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will stock 2,000 legal-sized rainbow trout, plus a few "lunker" rainbows and some excess hatchery winter steelhead, in the Whetstone Pond for kids to target during their week off school. Whetstone Pond is the pond adjacent to the ODFW office at the Denman Wildlife Area off East Gregory Road in White City. Whetstone anglers will have to conform with all applicable license and angling rules. Though adults cannot be legally kept from targeting the extra fish, event organizers have asked that seasoned anglers either bring kids to the pond or step aside until school resumes. The Whetstone Pond event is part of the so-called Youth Angling Enhancement Program created last year when the Oregon Legislature set aside $50,000 to fund youth angling opportunities across Oregon over the next two years, provided the money gets matched. The statewide matching money will come through the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation, which has already pledged $15,000 to the program.
