Or send your letter e-mail to: — Two with courage On Feb. 4, during the Medford City Council meeting, two members stood up for what was right and six hid behind the liberal interpretation of the Oregon constitution's vague protection of pornography and obscenity. Skip Knight and Curt Bennett bravely declared that now is the time to come to the plate and take a swing at restraining sexually-oriented businesses in Medford with a city ordinance. The rest of the council (Bill Moore, Jim Key, Bob Strosser, Matt Hart, Sal Esquivel and John Michaels) held to claims they made in October 1998 to uphold the liberal court decisions even though sexually oriented businesses are unwanted by concerned citizens of the Rogue Valley as evidenced by 3,000 signatures, plus more than 700 petitions in Medford's Ward 4. Last February, Medford's vision for the city's future was sabotaged by a flawed legal argument, therefore the liberal court rulings must be challenged in Oregon, both on the state and local levels. Long ago in Israel's history two men (Joshua and Caleb) envisioned a victory which was denied by 10 pessimistic cowards. Mr. Knight and Mr. Bennett were two passionate voices that challenged Medford's six skeptics. I therefore salute and honor Skip Knight and Curt Bennett for confronting giants such as Castles Superstore, Le Dolls nude dancing club and liberal lawyers. -- — Protect the trust An open letter to Medford Chief of Police Eric Mellgren: It was with sadness and chagrin that we read in the latest issue of the Oregon Observer newspaper an article that documents that ``(Medford) police officers lie on their reports when they are targeting certain individuals. This writer was once chairman of a Support Your Local Police Committee in the Oakland Bay Area during the '60s and '70s when the police were under constant and violent attacks. Such committees were created by the John Birch Society to prevent the creation of communist-inspired civilian review boards that were designed to discredit, neutralize and eventually take over control of the country's police. Tell us, Chief, are we once again providing grist for those same subversives' mill? Have our local police been infected with some of those viral agents that they were once accused of, and which could now give accusations by like-minded forces an aura of authenticity? Will the citizens of this city now be required to carry tape recorders every time they leave home just to protect themselves from false reports and false arrests? or will we be forced to file federal lawsuits under USC Title 42 when our civil rights are violated? We certainly hope such actions will not become necessary. Some of us are still romantic enough to believe, and practical enough to know, that the Thin Blue Line is all that stands between us and anarchy. Don't let us lose that trust. -- W.D.. Ferguson, Medford — Dumb idea Are you kidding me? The politician up north wants to put signs at the border saying you're welcome to visit but you can't stay. Wow! Here in Medford we probably wouldn't have all those Realtors that are members of the million-dollar club. All those contractors wouldn't be making a house a day, making some bucks. Hospitals might have some empty beds. Doctors would still be making house calls. The Hungry Woodsman might be the only place to eat. I don't think any of those people mentioned above would cast their vote for this dumb proposal.
