ACCESS gets $6 million grant to help Jackson County vets and their families Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 2, 2015 at 3:46 PM Posted Apr. 2, 2015 at 3:46 PM » Social News ACCESS Inc., which provides food, housing assistance and other support for low income people in Jackson County, has been awarded a $6 million grant by the Department of Veterans Affairs to assist homeless and at-risk veterans and their families. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert A. McDonald announced today the awarding of nearly $93 million nationally in three-year grants to assist approximately 45,000 veterans and their families. ACCESS was one of 24 non-profit agencies in 15 communities to receive the grant money. The V.A. estimates that the number of homeless veterans and family members will exceed 800 in Jackson County this year. The local grant funds, $2 million per year for three years, will be used for case management, security deposits and rent and utility payments for eligible families. It may also be used for expenses such as job search costs, clothing or tools needed for work, childcare and education opportunities.  “We are fortunate to have this opportunity to work with our community and help veteran families off the streets and into a home,” Jackie Schad, ACCESS executive director, said in a press release. David Mulig, director of support services for ACCESS, said the agency has been working with homeless veterans since 2012.  “With this funding we have an opportunity to make a huge difference," Mulig said. He noted that one of the biggest obstacle the agency faces in finding shelter for the homeless is the tight housing market locally, which he said has resulted in a 2 percent vacancy rate for rentals. Veterans looking for help can call ACCESS at 541-774-4322. ACCESS, which was established in 1976, is the official community action agency for Jackson County.
