Crews trying to stop advance of fire in Crater Lake Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 7, 2015 at 11:15 AM Posted Aug. 7, 2015 at 11:15 AM » Social News The National Creek Complex, two lightning-caused fires burning on the border of Crater Lake National Park and Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest near Union Creek, grew to a combined 204 acres Thursday, according to an update this morning from the National Forest Service. The Crescent fire, burning in the northwest corner of Crater Lake National Park, exhibited more activity Thursday than the National fire, which is burning in the national forest. Fire officials expect the two fires will merge into one fire at some point. A change in the weather flow to a cooler and moister maritime pattern should retard fire behavior over the next few days, fire officials said. Firefighters will try to take advantage of these more favorable conditions by extending firelines and strengthening existing road systems. Diane Hutton’s Northern Rockies Wildland Fire Management Team took over command of the fire at 9 p.m. Thursday, according to a press release. Crews will work today to build handline around the northeast corner of Crescent fire in an attempt to prevent the fire from burning farther east into Crater Lake National Park. The north side of the Crescent fire is now sealed with a direct handline, and firefighters will work to tie this line to the west to Highway 230, anchoring the fire on the north. Forest Service roads around the National fire are being widened and improved to ease access and to potentially act as firelines, officials said. The difficult topography to the south of the fires is being scouted for opportunities to engage the fire, which is located about 10 acres southwest of Diamond Lake. Helicopter personnel have located water sources to minimize turn-around time for bucket drops that will support ground personnel. So far six crews, 194 personnel and three helicopters are assigned to the complex. The Run Around the Rim Marathon is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 8 at Crater Lake National Park. Park officials expect weather conditions to minimize smoke concerns for runners.
