SOU appoints trustees through 2026 By Kevin Opsahl Updated: Jun 09, 2022 04:08 PM A A The new trustees were appointed by the governor and received confirmation by the state Senate Southern Oregon University recently announced the appointments of three new members and a handful of continuing members to its board of trustees. The board is in charge of budgeting, approving degree programs and hiring and assessing the performance of the SOU president. The board’s membership consists of 11 at-large trustees who serve four-year terms, while one position each is reserved for an SOU student, a faculty member and a nonfaculty staff member. Rick Bailey, SOU’s president, serves in a nonvoting, ex-officio capacity. Board members are appointed by Oregon’s governor and confirmed by the state Senate. The new members are Phoenix-Talent School District Superintendent Brent Barry; Christina Medina, regional business manager for Pacific Power; and Andrew Gay, SOU associate professor and chair of Communication, Media and Cinema. Returning to serve additional terms as trustees are Lyn Hennion, a retired financial advisor; Bill Thorndike, owner of Medford Fabrication; Sheila Clough, CEO of Mercy Flights; Jonathon Bullock, executive director of the Redmond Proficiency Academy; Shaun Franks, who works in the renewable energy industry; and Debra Fee Jing Lee, executive director of the Center for NonProfit Legal Services. Terms for all board members, regardless of how long they have been appointed, begin July 1 and run through June 30, 2026. Though Gay’s term, by law, is only two years.
