It was Medford's fourth robbery this month and the second of the day. While Medford police Lt. Tim George said all crime tends to go up in December, the late-night robbery at Lumpy's Tavern, 2718 N. Pacific Highway, Medford, was "a pretty aggravated case." In the robbery reported at about 11:20 p.m., two men wearing masks and carrying handguns came into Lumpy's and demanded cash from the till. They led the employee and three customers into a bathroom at gunpoint and told them to stay there, George said. No one was injured. "This was not a scenario where they slip a note to an employee," he said. "They endangered multiple people including customers. The threat level increases with that." Advertisement Kidnapping charges also could apply in such a case, where people are moved around by force, he noted. The robbers took an undisclosed amount to cash from the business and fled. Investigators suspect that the robbers are from the area and were familiar with the business. "When they garb themselves to disguise their identity, it's usually because they are local and afraid someone will recognize them or they know there will be surveillance cameras," George said. Lumpy's has cameras and Thursday detectives reviewed tape to see the robbers and to try to determine if they had visited the bar earlier without disguises to check out the business. Surveillance images couldn't be reproduced successfully in the newspaper, but police provided descriptions of the robbers. The suspects were both described as white men, 20 to 25 years old, between 6 feet and 6 feet 2 inches tall, with thin builds. One man wore a red, gray and black ski jacket, light blue jeans and tennis shoes. The other man wore a gray, long-sleeved, button-up shirt, blue jeans and tennis shoes. Police think the previous three robberies this month, all targeting payday loan businesses, are the work of one man. The Check 'N Go, 880 Biddle Road, was robbed Dec. 2 and again Wednesday, while Check Into Cash, 1560 Biddle Road, was robbed Dec. 4. The suspect in all three cases is described as a white man in his 40s or 50s, with brown hair and a mustache, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and jeans and carrying a black handgun.
