Kaeding dusts field in NST race By DON HUNT Mail Tribune WHITE CITY — The King of California keeps proving that he’s not too shabby whenever he races in the Pacific Northwest. Brent Kaeding, dubbed the King of California because of his 12 Golden State Challenge series point titles, roared to victory in a Northern Sprint Tour race at the Southern Oregon Speedway on Monday night. Kaeding, of Campbell, Calif., zipped past pole-sitter Rick Fauver of Everett, Wash., on the 23rd lap of the 30-lap feature race and wasn’t threatened the rest of the way. Fauver held on to take second, followed by Stephen Allard of Chico, Calif., Jeff Hodgson of St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, and Jimmy Trulli of Placerville, Calif. NST points leader Roger Crockett, plagued by brake problems much of the night, wound up in sixth place. Advertisement Local favorite Bill Nutter of Central Point won his heat race and was running strong in the main event, only to collide with rookie Matt Menne of Fort Jones, Calif., on the 15th lap. Nutter, who had nowhere to go when Menne spun out in front of him, fought back to finish seventh. Kaeding, 46, used his 30 years of racing experience to sneak underneath Fauver after the pair came out of turn two on the 23rd lap. "I got a good drive off the bottom," Kaeding said. "It was really slick on the first and second turns but I got a good drive coming out of there and I got him (Fauver) on the backstretch." Said Fauver: "I knew Brent would try to take me on the bottom, but I just couldn’t keep my car down there to hold him off. He deserved the win." Kaeding has now won seven of his 15 NST starts, including three at the White City track. He also has 65 Golden State Challenge victories during his brilliant career. "My crew did a good job of setting up the car," Kaeding said. A nasty wreck involving rookie Henry Van Dam of Enumclaw, Wash., and Cottage Grove’s Dale Smith marred the main event on the next-to-last lap. A flash of fire engulfed Van Dam’s car as it came to a stop in front of the main grandstands, but it quickly went out. Neither driver was injured, and Smith fought back to finish 10th. The late-race mishap was frustrating for Kaeding. The caution flag and ensuing re-start gave Fauver a better chance at winning, but Kaeding wouldn’t be denied. "The worst thing about it was seeing those cars torn up," Kaeding said. "It gets expensive." Crockett, meanwhile, clocked en eye-catching 11.840 seconds during qualifying. The time was just 14/100ths of a second off the track record, and he seemed destined for another big night. But the hydraulic line leading to his brakes began to leak, knocking him out of his heat race. Crockett was thus relegated to the B main, but he took second to Barry Martinez of Lynwood, Wash. The top four drivers in the B main transferred to the A main. Monday marked the beginning of what’s known as Speedweek, a six-day, six-race extravaganza for the NST drivers.
