Mustangs get back on track The Medford Mustangs got back on the winning track Saturday, sweeping the Humboldt Giants in a doubleheader at Miles Field. In the opener, Clint Rodreick threw his first complete game for the Mustangs, allowing only one earned run and walking none as the Mustangs won 7-2 and snapped its five game losing streak. In the nightcap, Tony Conklin hit his first home run of the season to lead the Mustangs to a 15-1 rout in five innings. In Game 1, the Mustangs scored two runs in the third inning off one single, a hit batsman and an error to grab a 6-0. That was more than enough offense for Rodreick as he picked up his second win of the season. Matt Skundrick had a triple for the Mustangs and Evan McArthur hit a double. In Game 2, Dustin Butler made an impressive first start for the Mustangs. He allowed only three hits, walked none and struck out two. Humboldt's only run was unearned. Conklin's home run was a two-run shot in the third inning. He had two hits on the day. The Mustangs scored 12 runs in the first two innings. Skundrick went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Shawn Backstrom went 3-for-3, scored three runs, drove in two, and stole a base. Skundrick and Backstrom each had a double. SOUTHERN OREGON DROPS TWO AGAINST PORTLAND TEAMS - At Portland, Mike Newmann belted a three-run home run in the first game against the Portland Wildcats, but it wasn't enough in a 6-5 loss. Southern Oregon lost 3-2 in the second game against the Portland Javelinas. The RiverDogs built a 5-3 lead but the Wildcats answered back with three runs in the sixth for the win. Casey Campbell took the loss, giving up five earned runs and 10 hits. Steve DeClerck and Colby Gonzalez each had two hits in Southern Oregon's eighth-straight loss. In the second game against the Portland Javelinas, Marcus Quincy went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Javelinas. The RiverDogs, 7-10, play the same two teams today in a doubleheader at noon. Rowe, who also picked up his third pitching win, started a six-run scoring burst in the third inning with a mammoth two-run home run over the right-field fence. Titus Weston added three hits for Ashland (10-1-1), while Mike Allen, Tim Hegdahl and Nick Ehlers each had two. PEPSI TOURNAMENT - At Roseburg, Brett Timmerman pitched a one-hitter and Chris Brewington ripped three hits to lead the North Medford Mavericks American Legion A team to a 10-0, five-inning win over Redmond at Legion Field. Timmerman struck out six and had two walks. He gave up Redmond's lone hit in the fifth inning. Brewington led a 13-hit attack, producing a double and two RBIs. Manny Alegria, Jimmy Ulrey and Beau Hovland each added two hits. SISKIYOU SPIRITS TOURNAMENT - At Weed, Calif., the South Medford Colts American Legion baseball team went 1-1 in a pair of games at the Siskiyou Spirits 4th of July tournament. The Colts held a 4-0 lead into the fifth inning before Chico erupted for four runs to tie the game then grabbed the 7-4 win with three more in the bottom of the sixth. Blake St. Onge had two hits for South Medford, while Ryan Norris provided a two-RBI single. The Colts rebounded with a 13-6 pounding of the Alturas Cubs. Corey O'Neill, Jeremy Franz, Alan Smith and St. Onge each had two hits. Franz knocked in three of his game-high six RBI with a bases loaded triple in a six-run second for the Colts. South Medford (4-5) plays today at 10 a.m. against South Siskiyou. In the opener, David Soria pitched a shut-out performance allowing just two hits, no walks and fanning 12. In Game 2, Brandon White led the offensive charge for the Stallions going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
