The woman charged with intentionally driving the wrong way on Interstate 5 and causing a Northern California crash that killed a 29-year-old father of three and former North Medford High School star athlete in January was sentenced to life in prison late last week. Judge Cara Beatty sentenced Grace Elizabeth Ward, of Red Bluff, to life in prison Friday after Ward pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, according to a Shasta County District Attorney’s Office Facebook post. She will be eligible for parole after 18 years, the release says. Ryan John Folsom, who died in the Jan. 7 wrong-way crash, had been driving south in a Honda Accord near Anderson, California, when Ward’s Chevrolet Impala struck Folsom’s vehicle head-on, according to the California Highway patrol. The crash happened at about 12:15 p.m. Folsom had been traveling in the right lane, and was driving to UC Davis Medical Center for a job interview, the post said. His car came to rest after sliding down an embankment. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Folsom was a former football and wrestling star at North Medford High School and earned all-state honors in both. He studied at Brigham Young University and had been attending medical school in San Antonio, Texas. He, his wife and three young sons had recently relocated to Medford, where they were living with other family members while he interviewed for residency positions at hospitals across the country. “Ryan’s wife, Lauren, and mother, Mindy, both addressed the court,” the release said. “They described their heartbreaking loss and generously offered forgiveness to Ward.”
