Ashland police went to the Hillside Inn apartments in the 1500 block of Siskiyou Boulevard around 8:35 a.m. after the apartment manager heard shots. No one was injured in the shooting, police said. Shooting suspect Ataji "Anthony" Duca Dominguez, 30, was taken to Ashland Community Hospital for a medical check, then lodged in the Jackson County Jail on charges of unlawful use of a weapon, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief, Ashland police Sgt. Jim Alderman said. Advertisement "It was meth and cocaine psychosis," Alderman said, based on information received from the medical tests. "He had been bingeing and started hallucinating and shooting." Alderman said Dominguez insisted that someone had broken into his apartment, even after police searched the apartment and found no one else there. Apartment manager Kevin Geyer approached the apartment after he heard shots. "He was sweating pretty bad and he kept claiming someone had broke into his room," Geyer said of Dominguez. "He was pretty shaky." Police said Dominguez fired six shots into the floor of his second-floor apartment and bullets entered another apartment. The downstairs tenant was on vacation, so the apartment below was empty, Geyer said. Geyer said Dominguez had moved in only days earlier and a background check run on prospective tenants didn’t uncover any problems. Jackson County Circuit Court records show that Dominguez has two convictions in 1995 and 1998 for driving under the influence of intoxicants. Alderman said paranoia and hallucinations can result from heavy use of drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamines. No drugs were found in Dominguez’s apartment, he said.
