Mustangs storm from behind to stun Knights MURPHY -- For more than three quarters, North Valley had Hidden Valley's number in a showdown of unbeaten Skyline Conference boys teams. Sam Jarrett sank two free throws with seven minutes remaining to give North Valley a 35-23 lead, and it seemed only a matter of time before the Knights walked off with the win. But in a stunning change of momentum, Hidden Valley went on a 14-0 run to end the game and collect a 37-35 victory. "They outplayed us for most of the game, but our kids never lost hope," Hidden Valley coach Ken Lathen said. "We finally got them into a quicker pace." Kevin Ries and Caleb Thomas nailed 3-pointers during the Mustangs' rally, and with two minutes to play Thomas scored again to make it 35-33. Dereck Horning tied the game at 35 with a pair of free throws with one minute remaining and then Willy Isley got a steal and layup with 12 seconds to go to culminate the improbable comeback. The Mustangs (9-3, 4-0 Skyline) forced a faster pace by implementing a 1-3-1 halfcourt trap. "This has to rank among my best wins in 32 years of coaching," Lathen said. "Our kids could have packed it in, but they didn't. They showed a lot of heart." Thomas, a 6-foot-3 senior post, finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots. Luke Gentry led North Valley (9-4, 3-1 Skyline) with 10 points. NORTH VALLEY (35) -- Gentry 10, Jarrett 9, Grosenbach 5, Wright 2, Godfrey 9, Phillips 0, Ironside 0, Keeling 0. Totals: 13 7-14 35.
