Cavers sink South from charity stripe SOC girls basketball roundup GRANTS PASS -- Kaci Williams made the most of a second opportunity Friday night as Grants Pass handed South Medford a 47-41 overtime loss in Southern Oregon Conference girls basketball. The Grants Pass senior wing had a chance to win the game in regulation, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 in the waning seconds and the game tied at 37. Williams converted 3-of-4 from the line in overtime and the Cavers hit 6-of-10 free throws in the extra period to turn back the Panthers. Megan Moon made the Cavers' first two baskets in overtime sandwiched around Whitney Grant's driving layin for South (7-7, 3-3 SOC). Then Williams gave the Cavers a four-point lead with two free throws. "It was a real physical game," said Grants Pass coach Shaun Gross. "Both teams were playing real tough defense." Grants Pass (10-6, 3-3 SOC) trailed 29-20 late in the third quarter, but made the final two buckets of the period to cut the deficit to five. The Cavers were up 37-34 with about one minute to play. Karla Zenz made one free throw to pull South closer, then junior guard Kellie Thomas sank a driving pull-up jumper with 11 seconds to tie the game. Junior point guard Heather Fossen led the Panthers with 12 points and Grant added 11. "Fossen is a steady player," said Gross. "When they needed a bucket, she tended to put it in or get to the free-throw line." Zenz had a game-high 10 rebounds. For Grants Pass, Moon led all scorers with 15 points.
