Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli Eagle Point cruises past Henley EAGLE POINT — It may have been the season-opening game, but the Eagle Point High baseball team looked to be in midseason form Tuesday at The Yard. Senior right-hander Chris Boyd fired a three-hitter through five innings and Kevin Gray and Casey Hedrick each went 2- for-3 at the plate as the Eagles cruised to a 7-0 victory over Henley. Eagle Point added seven stolen bases to its offensive attack and, perhaps most impressively, played error-free defense. "It’s encouraging to see us play that well the first time out," Eagle Point coach Tom Britton said. "We did a lot of nice things, but it’s one game, and we’re not going to get too excited about winning one game." The Eagles return all but one starter from last season’s squad that finished 12-14, and they’ve got a nice addition in shortstop Tyson Nelson, who robbed Henley of two hits Tuesday. But Britton hasn’t forgotten the way EP started out last season — winning seven of its eight preseason games only to lose 13 of 14 in the Southern Oregon Conference. "We’re a year older and a lot better, but we got humbled last year when league started," Britton said. "We’re not in any position to be tooting our horn." Leading 3-0 through five innings, the Eagles broke the game open with a three-run sixth. David Hinkle walked and Ricky O’Callahan singled to open the inning. They moved up a base on a double steal and Mark Farrell and Carl Christian followed with RBI singles. The Eagles scored their final run on an error. Drew Dechenne and Ariah Nead combined for the shutout, striking out eight total batters and giving up five hits. Luke Hall and Nead had two hits apiece for the Knights (1-0), who scored two runs in the top of the first and four more in the fourth. Bend took team honors with a 301, while Tualatin finished second at 317 and Marshfield third at 322, followed by Lakeridge (325) and North Medford (337). Barry, a sophomore, will begin defense of his Southern Oregon Conference individual title Thursday at Eagle Point.
