Ashland’s Mayfield wins Eugene Marathon By Eugene Register-Guard May 02, 2016 12:00 AM A A EUGENE — Ashland native Camelia Mayfield won the Eugene Marathon women’s race on Sunday. The first-time marathoner, who lives in Bend, won in 2 hours, 47 minutes and 45 seconds. The 23-year-old Mayfield, whose track career at Portland State ended in 2015, was in second place behind a half marathon participant until they went in different directions after crossing over the Willamette River at mile 10. From there it was all Mayfield. “This is my first marathon, so I was just trying to get under 2:50:00,” she said. “I got that by a couple minutes, which I’m pretty happy about.” Mayfield, a former prep standout for Ashland High, is No. 3 all-time at PSU in the 10,000 with a time of 34:35.88. She was seventh in the Eugene half marathon in 2012. Even though this was her first full marathon, Mayfield liked her chances for a good finish, but not a victory. “I was looking at results from last year and I kind of figured I’d be maybe top five so it was a huge surprise to all of a sudden be up front,” she said. “I’ve never crossed a finish line with the tape, hands up, so that was great.” Bridget Dawes was second in 2:57:48. Carlos Trujillo qualified for the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro with his victory in the men’s race. His time was 2:18:54, 6 seconds under the Olympic qualifying standard of 2:19:00 and nearly 10 minutes ahead of second-place finisher Chris Yates (2:28:16). “I think it will hit me later on,” Trujillo said. “Right now I’m just trying to be able to stand up straight.”
