However, I may have a new one. What is the code relating to those big "POD" containers that are dropped on the street in front of a residence? There is one in my neighborhood that has been on the street for at least two months. — Ted K., Medford Park it and listen up, Ted. We've got the lowdown on what you're after. According to Medford police, it is illegal to have such a container on the street unless you have a permit. The Medford Public Works Department will generally grant you one, but it's only good for three days. "Anything more than three days would require a permit," said Lt. Mike Budreau. Typically, police ask that such containers go in your driveway, out of the way of traffic and pedestrians. The ordinance, which covers these containers and any other type of right-of-way blockage, can be found in the city's municipal code — section 6.360, to be specific. Under subsection 4, the ordinance reads, "No person shall attach any object to the ground, sidewalk, curb, pavement, or to any pole, wall, hydrant tree or structure in the public right-of-way or on public property except by prior express permission of the (Medford City) Council on such terms and conditions as the council may provide." It continues: "The placing of obstructions or signs in the right of way or on public property without consent is hereby declared to be a public nuisance, and the director (of public works) or chief of police may summarily abate the nuisance."
