I've seen them anywhere from $300 to $700. Even at Wal-Mart there are two adjacent parking slots that differ. One says it's a $300 fine for parking there without a placard; the other says $450. Maybe it's because the one stating the $450 amount is one parking space closer to Wal-Mart's front door. Maybe it's because the one stating the $450 amount is one parking space closer to Wal-Mart's front door. — Jack S., reader The varying fines displayed on disabled parking signs stem from the date the sign was posted, said Medford police patrol Lt. Bob Hansen. "There is no difference between one space and another in terms of the fine," Hansen said. The Oregon Legislature in 2001 ordered a statewide maximum fine of $450 for parking in a disabled space without a permit, superseding the fines previously set by local municipalities. Before that, the city of Medford and Jackson County, for example, could enact different fines for parking illegally in a disabled space. Now the fine is the same no matter where you go in Oregon. "I think it was a really good move to make it a standard amount," Hansen said. "If it says less or more than $450, it's probably an older sign. "That doesn't change the fine. It's still a maximum of $450." Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O. Box 1108, Medford, OR 97501; by fax to 541-776-4376; or by e-mail to [email protected].
