VISUAL ART Third Friday brings new exhibits to downtown galleries Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 20, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Nov. 20, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Rogue Gallery & Art Center hosts its annual members' exhibit, this year titled "Passages, Travels and Transformations," through Dec. 18 at the nonprofit art center, 40 S. Bartlett St., Medford. More than 60 artists will showcase their personal travels, transitions and travails through a mix of media — watercolor, acrylic oil, pastel, photography — and styles, such as portraiture, landscape, still life and more. Look for a scene with a European flair painted in oil, "Grandfather's First Job," by Charity Hubbard; a large-scale, lushly yellow abstract by Alx Fox titled "Fire Fly"; an equally vivid "Red Tide" in mixed media by Janus Innes; a waterfront scene in watercolor, "Mi Miel, My Love," by Betty Barss; a portrait of a lovely young woman painted in oil on Belgian linen, "Quiet Hope," by Sheri Denardi of Southern Oregon Society of Arts; and so much more in the center's main gallery. Small-scale encaustic and mixed media art by Pam Haunschild will be showcased in the center's Community Gallery through Friday, Nov. 27. Haunschild's work is inspired by natural scenes — images of birds, flowers, bees, fish and other small animals surface within layered, abstract patterns. Her "The Pedigree of Honey" is a richly textured study of a sunflower blossom. A reception for the artists will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20. Cheese and other snacks will be served. See www.roguegallery.org or call 541-772-8118 for information. Just in time for the holidays, Art du Jour Gallery, 213 E. Main St., will showcase teddy bears crafted in vintage Harris Tweed by Jay and Ginny Matheson through November. Jay Matheson's grandfather, Murdo Matheson, was a crofter on the island of Lewis, Scotland. The Mathesons have rescued vintage Harris Tweed for decades. The handwoven cloth is made from pure virgin wool, dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides, or Western Isles, of Scotland. The Mathesons' Tweedy Bears come in two styles. One is an 18-inch bear modeled after Barabell and Kellyn from their son Alec Jay Matheson's children's book, "Rocky Road to Icy Top," illustrated by Ginny Matheson. Larger, 22-inch Highland Rogues Tweedy Bears are modeled after Scottish historical figures. Ginny Matheson also creates necklaces with tiny bears wearing kilts. Some of the bears available at Art du Jour Gallery are "thrifty bears" and are not made from authentic Harris Tweed, although authentic versions can be ordered and come with certification of their authenticity. Also a painter, Matheson will showcase a dozen acrylic paintings of Scotland's historical dignitaries portrayed in the form of bears. Rogue Valley artist Adam Bunch will present his exhibit, "Magicae Primaevo," through November in the Salon gallery at Art du Jour. Bunch captures realms of fantasy in his collection of paintings created with alcohol-based ink. His scenes depict fantasy figures and animals. Bunch's father was an artist, illustrator and graphic designer. Bunch works as a freelance illustrator and concept designer. He uses skills he developed by taking painting courses at Rogue Community College and human anatomy and character-design workshops at Southern Oregon Art Academy. Bunch's new project, "Tricerychon," is a series of novels and illustrated editions. Art du Jour will host a reception for the artists from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20. There will be live music by Rick Patsche, and Alec Jay Matheson will sign copies of his book. Prints from the pages of the book will be available. See www.artdujourgallery.com or call 541-770-5190.
