LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Oct. 7 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Oct. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Letter's claim is false Doug Dusenberry (letters, Sept. 25) seems very confused. His focus on the claim that Southern Oregon Climate Action Now promoted a carbon tax is false. While SOCAN is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing future generation an opportunity to thrive on a livable planet, we did not endorse a carbon tax during the 2015 Oregon legislative session. A review of SOCAN positions on our website ( http://socaninfo ) reveals that our preference was for a cap approach similar to that which has been successful at stimulating economic growth and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in California and several other states across the nation. There are many reasons for preferring this approach — too numerous to itemize here — but the main benefit is that it targets the problem rather than imposing a tax and hoping the tax achieves the goal of reduced emissions. We have a choice: We can take the advice of the experts and reduce our emissions, hoping that we can do so soon enough to divert the worst outcomes. Alternatively we could adopt the approach Mr. Dusenberry seems to advocate: we could sacrifice our grandchildren and beyond for personal short-term greed. The correct moral choice is clear to most. Paula Perez Costas Ashland No jet boats at Tou Velle I love Tou Velle State Park and the Rogue River. I am concerned about the jet boat tours leaving from Tou Velle. I feel that these tours degrade the natural quality of the park and the beautiful Rogue River. The predominant sounds there are the river, wildlife, and nature. When jet boats race by, that tranquility is ruined. The boats are very loud, they startle wildlife, and bother visitors to the river who come to relax and escape from the city. Let's leave the noise and speed of the city in the city, where it belongs. Visitors who wish to experience the river by jet boat can visit Grants Pass or Gold Beach where there are existing and well-established jet boat tours. By not allowing jet boat tours at Tou Velle, we will show that we want the Rogue River upstream of Grants Pass to remain natural and quiet. Please comment at: [email protected] . Griff Colegrove Central Point Join Meals on Wheels For the most rewarding volunteer opportunity you'll ever have, consider being a meal-delivery volunteer for Food & Friends (Meals on Wheels). For a mere two hours a week, you can make a profound difference in people's lives and enrich your own in the process. There are so many wonderful people in the valley who greatly appreciate the hot meals delivered to them each day and the friendly face behind it. Be part of it! In light of the shootings at UCC on Thrusday, Oct. 1, only an idiot would post a picture of a gun and talk about taking revenge on people on any day, but especially that day. To then not face any charges for that insensitivity boggles my mind. We're teaching our children to be aware of what is posted on social media and report odd behavior. Thank goodness someone had the foresight to do that. Those not wishing to hold the culprit accountable lack foresight. What's wrong with this picture? Mary Lewis Medford Obama pre-empted Bibi Not only did Obama pull John Kerry and Samantha Power out of the U.N. General Assembly, boycotting Netanyahu's speech, but he also wisely interrupted Bibi's speech being aired live on C-Span to announce the horrific tragedy in Roseburg and spend the next 12 minutes on his anti-gun agenda tirade which totally pre-empted Netanyahu's speech.
