PREP GOLF Crater's Giles shares state title in Class 5A Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 20, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted May. 20, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Given one last glimmer of hope on the final day at the Class 5A girls golf state tournament, Crater junior Daniele Giles made sure to seize her opportunity Tuesday at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis. In a back-and-forth battle with three-time defending champion Madison Odiorne of Summit, Giles erased a three-stroke deficit by the seventh hole of her final round but found herself again trailing by one shot with four holes to play. The Crater standout patiently waited for her opportunity to pounce and finally found it on the 18th hole, showing incredible composure to net a birdie against Odiorne’s par to force a first-place tie in dramatic fashion. Giles’ second straight round of 70 allowed her to finish at 140 with Odiorne and secure the first-ever state title for the Crater girls golf program. For the Summit senior, it was her record fourth straight state championship. “I’m just so excited,” said Giles, 17. “In practice rounds before this tournament I was playing pretty well. I wasn’t striking my irons very well but my putter was really working for me, today and yesterday.” Everything came together on the fateful final hole Tuesday. Giles and Odiorne each striped their tee shots down the middle of the fairway on the par-4, 373-yard hole. Odiorne then came up about 15 feet short of the green on her approach shot from about 140 yards out, opening the door for Giles, who plopped an iron shot right over the pin about 12 feet from the hole. “I knew I was one down and it was the last hole so something had to happen,” said Giles. “When I saw she went short on her approach shot, I knew I had a chance to get a stroke back and I put it close.” After Odiorne chipped within one foot of the cup, Giles was left with a chance at glory facing her downhill birdie putt. “I knew I had to let it just fall in, which was what it did,” she said. Although she felt good about the effort on the moment of impact, Giles admitted that the putt seemed to take forever to find its destination. “It was kind of scary because it slowed down just before it fell in,” she said. “I was just like, ‘Oh, just fall in.’” When the ball finally escaped into the hole, Crater girls golf coach Brent Bowker said it was a fitting end to a steady two-day run for Giles. “She’s just a great girl and she’s really shown a lot of composure, especially over the last two years,” said Bowker. “She played a really great match again today and I think this is just the tip of the iceberg for her.” Odiorne took a two-stroke advantage into the final round after Giles’ teammate, Kiana Oshiro, was disqualified Monday when she mistakenly signed for a 67 on her scorecard when she actually shot a 68. When Giles bogeyed the fifth hole, that lead grew to three, but birdies on hole Nos. 7-9 put the Comet ahead by one shot at the turn. A bogey on 10 by Giles drew the players even again, and each player drained 30-foot birdie putts on the 13th hole. Giles’ bogey at the 14th put Odiorne in prime position with a one-shot advantage, but the former never lost her composure or competitive spirit. “The whole round I was just trying to get my pars,” said Giles. “I knew birdies would come if I just kept with that mindset. I was kind of thinking it was just match play against Madison because I knew that was really who I had to beat. We ended up tying, which I’m totally fine with that.” Giles finished 17th at 164 in last year’s Class 6A state tournament after tying for 23rd with a 169 her freshman year at Crater. Bowker said that although Oshiro was allowed to play in the second round, the sophomore opted not to. With both players set to return next year, the head coach couldn’t be more excited about the future of Crater golf. “Obviously it’s a big steppingstone,” Bowker said of Giles’ championship effort. “We haven’t really had a whole lot of success in golf and hopefully this will help get more girls involved and get a good team effort starting from here and into the future.” TEAM SCORES: Summit 314-314—628, Bend 360-356—716, Wilsonville 361-355—716, Pendleton 378-352—730, Ridgeview 372-377—749, La Salle Prep 415-371—786, Crescent Valley 390-397—787, Corvallis 386-413—799. Grants Pass finished 12th in the team competition, with senior Donnie Thomason leading the way by tying for 23rd overall at 164. Beaverton’s Gigi Stoll earned her second individual state title at 11-under-par 133, while St. Mary’s Academy earned the team title. Ford carded a second-day 83 to finish at 165 overall. She started on the 10th hole and had six bogeys and two double bogeys on her first 10 holes but finished strong in her state debut. Henley’s Katie Collom won another state title at 3-over-par 147 and the Hornets claimed the team title with a 692 overall. Fisher had four birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey for a second consecutive 3-over-par 75. Teammate Alex Brown shot a 76 to finish tied for 33rd. Lake Oswego dominated, winning the team title with all four of its placers finishing in the top five. Fellow Eagles Zach Henley and Taylor Scott shot 81 and 82, respectively, to move into a tie for 27th in the individual race at 168 overall and boost Eagle Point to a sixth-place showing in the team competition at 674. Crescent Valley junior Kevin Geniza shot even-par 144 to win the boys title, while Summit was the team champion at 620. Buoyed by Johnson’s effort, the Mustangs placed fifth overall at 708. Seaside won the team title at 623, while Mazama junior Bryce Wortman claimed the individual crown at 6-under-par 138.
