As your editorial points out, “a healthy public transportation system is a vital part of a growing economy.” Passing the levy will mean more federal and state grants to employ more drivers, mechanics and other workers. For the price of a cup of coffee a month, property owners get the satisfaction of knowing they are helping the young, the disabled and the disadvantaged the ability to get where they need to go. Like your editorial says: “And you thought a bus system benefits only those who ride the buses. In a real sense, it benefits all of us.” Please Like “Rogue Valley Transit Now” on Facebook and see its website: http://www.roguevalleytransitnow.org . Allen Hallmark Talent History exhibit valuable I recently attended the Southern Oregon Historical Society exhibit at the Rogue Valley Mall titled "Courage in the Golden Valley." It provides a very interesting and informative perspective on the ordeals and contributions that the Chinese community made to our Rogue Valley during the late 19th century. It did indeed take courage to live in a very hostile environment where they were not allowed to own land, where sunset laws were enforced and only the most difficult and dangerous jobs were available. The exhibit follows several families through these difficult times. The Oregon Historical Society in Portland has a complementary exhibit on loan from New York, which follows the Chinese immigration situation across the nation. It, too, is excellent, but lacks the local and personal touch of the SOHS exhibit. These exhibits offer a chance to reflect upon how poorly we have treated "immigrants" to this country: Chinese, Japanese, Irish, Polish, etc. This country is not alone in this behavior, but, hopefully, we can all learn and treat our fellow man better. "Do onto others ..." William Gates Ashland What Democrats love Recently, Michael Long was quick to point to Republicans as "haters" and included a long list of people and things they hate. Democrats have started using "hate" in the place of "disagreement." As Long stereotyped Republicans with what they "hate," I could easily do the same with Democrats and what they "love." Here's how: Democrats love people in poverty, so they can buy their votes with promises of food stamps, housing subsidies and welfare. Democrats love minorities to feel like victims so they can promise them social justice and be their saviors, because surely they can't save themselves. Democrats love to push for free everything, as long as someone else pays for it. Democrats love to try and steal Christmas celebrations from children in schools. And the coup de grace — Democrats love to allow women to kill unborn children! What I have just written is no more outrageous than what Long wrote about Republicans. So, all the Democrats should kick off their Birkenstocks and have a cup of herbal tea. If we can survive eight years of Obama, we can surely survive four years of Trump, because if it's between Trump and Hillary, I will vote for him every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Ray Myers Grants Pass Libraries in good hands As longtime Jackson County Library users and supporters, we wish to congratulate Library Director Tammy Westergard on recently receiving an award for outstanding library work (Mail Tribune, March 22). On our frequent visits to the library, we've noted how heavily it is being used by the public. The library's many programs for people of all ages are a constant draw. We think Westergard and the Library Board of Directors are doing a fine job and are pleased that our countywide library services are in such good hands. Ed and Ronnie Lee Budge Medford Pitts forgets In reference to the Leonard Pitts article dated March 23 concerning the "pious insincerity of Mitch McConnell." So soon Pitts forgets: "If you like your plan you can keep it, period." "If you like your doctor you can keep your doctors, period." Those lies were real! It's time that his pious attitude cease. Please find a new job, "Leo the Lefty." Jim Barry Medford Paying the price In April of 2012 I wrote a letter to the editor that stated my Republican Party had abandoned conservatism for radicalism and how they are paying the price. However, they, in their ignorance or denial, don't attribute the disenchantment of the public with their do-nothing or block-everything for the last four years. Americans are sick to death of their not accomplishing anything of import, while they still collect their pay, health insurance and remarkable retirement. The public is desperate so they embrace someone like Trump. Now that is desperate! Imagine electing someone like Trump, having access to trigger a nuclear response to an insult — whoopee — he won't be spilling his blood, only those of the young men and women who will have to defend us. He certainly won't initiate a tax structure that will require him and his buddies to pay their fair share of taxes! Unfortunately, while the Republicans are paying the price, so are we!
