Minear Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jun. 21, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Jun. 21, 2015 at 2:00 AM »  Social News Donald M. Minear The Lord took Donald M. Minear to be with Him June 1, 2015. Don was born January 28, 1921, to parents, Jessie M. and Mearl I. Minear in their family home on Stage Road South Medford. One of Don's favorite stories was when the doctor came to deliver him on a cold winter night, his mom was charged only $4. So he says he wasn't worth much at birth. Don graduated from Medford High School in 1939. He began work in the family pear orchard and small dairy as a young boy. He attended Biola University for half a year. When World War II started, the draft board required him to come home. He enlarged the dairy and was given a quota of milk to be delivered to Snider's Dairy, which provided milk to the new Camp White Army Base. At age 19 he became responsible for taking care of the dairy and family orchard. He and his brother, Robert, formed Minear Brothers, and managed many orchards together. Don was active in many organizations in the area. In 1995 he was awarded the Henry Hartman Cup for Horticulture for outstanding service to Oregon. He was active in the First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon for many years. Other boards he served on were Talent Irrigation District, Southern Oregon Sales Packing Plant, Jackson County Soil Conservation, Pacific Retirement Services, and the Rogue Valley Manor Board. Don was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, always first taking time for his family. Don was known for his storytelling. He led a full, active life. He enjoyed water and snow skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, rafting, motorcycling, boating, camping, hunting, fishing, golf, RVing, traveling the world, and watching sports on TV. Don married Zavive Lester June 24, 1945, in the First Baptist Church. He was looking forward to their 70th anniversary. They lived on their ranch until 1995 when they moved to the Rogue Valley Manor. Don had four siblings who preceded him in death; Gladys Williams, Ruth Alborn, Robert Minear, and Glenna Thompson. Don is survived by his devoted wife of 70 years, Zavive and three daughters and their husbands, Donalyn and Bob Cambas, Mary Jo and Murl Flenner, and Becky and Jeff Plankenhorn. Don has 9 grandchildren; Patrick Juba (Kait Juba), Michael Juba (Ann Juba), Katy Hersh (Justin Hersh), Darby Flenner (Jullie Flenner), Kylee Jo Flenner, Ryan Plankenhorn (Lindsay Plankenhorn), Tim Plankenhorn (Sarah Plankenhorn), Andy Plankenhorn, and Megan Shaw (Dan Shaw). Don also leaves 14 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 26, 2015 at the First Baptist Church, 649 Crater Lake Avenue, Medford, Ore. Gifts in lieu of flowers may be sent to the First Baptist Church or Grace Christian Schools at 649 Crater Lake Avenue, Medford, Ore. 97504.
