Already weary from a 465-mile trip to the northeast corner of the state, the Crusaders watched their early two-goal lead disappear to a physical Umatilla team in the Class 2A/1A quarterfinals. From that point on, however, St. Mary’s was unstoppable, scoring two goals for a 4-2 victory. "We found our poise after they scored their second goal," Crusader coach Matt Faurot said. "That, along with one of our players leaving with an injury, really seemed to spark us." St. Mary’s (15-1) regained the lead three minutes later and added an insurance goal 10 minutes after that. Umatilla saw the opposite effect after St. Mary’s answered. Advertisement "After our fourth goal, their morale was broken," Faurot said. "They broke down mentally and two of their top players were ejected." The Crusaders were in good shape, scoring two goals in three minutes in the first half. Umatilla hurt itself with an own goal in the 25th minute. Two minutes later, Martin Nelson jumped to head in an Austin Grant pass. The Vikings cut the lead to one just before halftime on a Roberto Barajas goal. "At the end of the half, they were spending a lot of time on our side," Faurot said. "I was glad to see the half end." Umatilla’s Juan Campos scored three minutes out of halftime to complete the comeback. "Their strength was in their star forwards, Campos and Barajas," Faurot said. "They made a lot of nice plays for them." Duncan MacDiarmid scored the go-ahead goal, a 22-yard volley on a pass from Josh Jones. MacDiarmid scored his second goal in the 56th minute after streaking through defenders to get a pass from Grant. Dylan Bourke earned three saves in the net for St. Mary’s, including a diving deflection with his team leading 3-2. St. Mary’s outshot the Vikings, 12-5. The Crusaders advance to the state semifinals and will face Catlin Gabel on Saturday in a rematch of last season’s state title game. Class 3A HIDDEN VALLEY 2, SEASIDE 1 — At Seaside, freshman Cory Dean, playing in only his third varsity match, scored the game’s winning goal to give No. 9-ranked Hidden Valley a first-round playoff victory. No. 7-ranked Seaside took the lead with a goal in the seventh minute, but the Mustangs (11-3) answered two minutes later on a goal by sophomore forward Joe Guevara. It stayed 1-1 until 10 minutes into the second half, when Dean found the net on an assist by Guevara. Dean had been called up to the varsity for added depth in the playoffs. Hidden Valley will host Brookings in the state quarterfinals in Murphy on Saturday. MCLOUGHLIN 4, HENLEY 1 — At Milton-Freewater, Henley dropped a first-round playoff game to the Greater Oregon League champions. Sixth-ranked McLoughlin plays La Salle in a quarterfinal game on Saturday. The Hornets, who earned the No. 3 seed out of the Skyline Conference, finished the season 10-4.
