Learn more about ways to conserve energy and save money when you download these user-friendly smartphone utilities. And don’t forget, Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22. 1. GoodGuide: GoodGuide is a mobile app that makes Earth-friendly shopping a snap. Simply scan a product’s barcode with your smartphone and get instant product ratings as you shop. The app has info on just about everything: Its database of more than 120,000 products includes food, personal care and household products. Carbon Emissions Calculator: Find out how much carbon dioxide you release with this handy app. To find out, you’ll enter in how much money you spent on utility bills (electricity, heating and natural gas) and the app will pull up your carbon dioxide output. Light Bulb Finder: This fun free app can help you save energy… and cash. Open it up and it will help you switch out all your regular lightbulbs for energy-efficient ones with the right style, light quality and fit. The app also features information on cost, savings and environmental impact, and you can see photos of all of the bulbs, as well. The app also lets you make a shopping list so you can buy bulbs directly through the app or at a local store. When you enter your ZIP code, the app will point you toward local recycling centers, offering their contact info as well as their hours and the types of materials they collect.
