U.S. Rep. Greg Walden said in a news release that the proposed timber payments extension is attached to a bill that would reform how doctors are paid under Medicare. "This two-year extension gives us time to continue work on a long-term plan to reform federal forest policy to grow jobs in the woods, improve forest health, and provide certainty for essential local services like schools and roads," Walden said in a prepared statement. Walden's spokesman Andrew Malcolm said the bill has "broad bipartisan support" and is expected to pass the House before heading to the U.S. Senate. Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden said last week that he also would be putting forward a proposal to extend the program. Jackson County received about $7.8 million in SRS funds for the 2013-14 fiscal year, and would receive about 5 percent less for 2014-15.
