Mustangs take two at Legion baseball tourney HILLSBORO � The Medford Mustangs American Legion baseball team brought their A-game into Sunday�s play at the John Nero wood bat tournament at Hare Field. With a potent offensive attack and some dominating pitching, the Mustangs remained the only undefeated team in the eight-team tournament at 5-0 with a sweep of Sunday�s twin bill. The Mustangs had little trouble with Milwaukee in a 9-0 win then routed Salem�s North Valley Hurricanes, 13-3, in six innings for their sixth victory in a row. Tony Conklin went the distance in Game 1, striking out 13 batters while scattering just two hits for his fifth win. Medford totaled only six hits but took advantage of seven walks, three wild pitches and three pass balls against Milwaukee, the only winless team in tournament action. Conklin breezed through the first three innings before giving up two hits in the fourth. He settled down and retired the final 11 batters in order, including seven of the last nine by strikeout. Medford put the game away in the fifth with four runs. Colby Gonzales led off with a walk and came around to score on a Travis Dunlap triple. Dunlap stayed at third through the first two outs of the inning before 14-year-old Rob Folsom knocked him home on a run-scoring error. Medford scored the final two runs on passed balls. Dunlap led the Mustangs with two hits in three at-bats. In Game 2, Andy Bartels ended the contest due to the 10-run mercy rule in the sixth with a one-out, three-run double. Dunlap belted a two-run home run in the second and added a solo shot in the fourth, his ninth and 10th homers of the season. Josh Bottjer picked up the win, allowing only two earned runs. The Mustangs have given up only two earned runs in the tournament. Conklin�s shutout was also the third time in four games that Medford pitching has blanked an opponent. The Mustangs (21-9) take on Wilson High�s Alpenrose at 1:30 p.m. today and wrap things up with a game against Glencoe later in the day. Ryan Garrett cracked a one-run triple in the first to start a five-run inning. The pitching tandem of Bryan Strodthoff and Matt Holte gave up 10 hits but limited Rex-Putnam to six runs. The Royals face the winner of the Clackamas/David Douglas game today at 9 a.m. If they win the first game, they will move on to a triple-header to defend their title. The Colts face Shasta Lake today at 5 p.m. in the finals. In the tournament, South Medford has posted a 3-0 record and has outscored its opponents 27-1.
