DUCK NOTES Recovered lineman George plays catch-up Comment By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted Apr. 14, 2015 at 8:46 PM By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted Apr. 14, 2015 at 8:46 PM » Social News EUGENE — Elijah George is eager to finally get his college football career started. Like many true freshmen, the offensive lineman redshirted during his first year at Oregon in 2013 after arriving from Las Vegas. Then as George was preparing to make his debut last fall, he suffered a knee injury that required surgery and kept him out for the year. “That’s pretty tough, watching on the sidelines for two years,” George said after Oregon’s practice on Monday. “Being injured, I tried to turn it into a positive and that drove me to get back. When I am tired, I don’t let it affect me because I know how I felt when I couldn’t play. I feed off of it. It was tough the first couple months, but it got better.” George is able to practice with the team this spring and should be full strength for the fall, he said. Like most Oregon offensive linemen, the 6-foot-5, 290-pound sophomore is trying out different positions. “I am at tackle now and learning guard,” George said. “I try to learn it all because I don’t want to be set with one position. So I am tackle one day and guard the next.” George spent his first two years at the school watching and learning while dreaming of taking the field. “I am always with Jake Pisarcik and Cam (Hunt), they are helping me,” he said. “I always like to ask questions, that is what I do, so the transition is going pretty well.” HALFWAY HOME: Oregon hit the midway point of spring practices with its seventh workout on Monday. The Ducks' spring game is May 2. “Installation has been good in every phase,” Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said. “We have gotten everything we planned for in at this point. A lot of times at this stage, you are going ‘Let’s taper off here, let’s not do this’, so from that standpoint it has been good. The pace has been good. It’s funny, the other day we were running around trying to amp it up and get things going. It felt slow, but we had more plays than we had in any third spring practice for the last six years. That is a good sign when it seems slow, but it is fast.” The Ducks conducted a scrimmage on Friday. “The offense came out with the right frame of mind and the defense didn’t get off to as good of a start, but they battled back,” Helfrich said. “That is the thing in spring ball, you say this guy made a great play but realize that it was against somebody on your own team, so you have to evaluate all that together. The physicality picked up, the offense got the better of it at the beginning but it was very physical by the end, which is good. We have not been a great scrimmage team, we joked about that ever since I have been back here, and it was one of the best we had from a straight pads-popping scenario.” ROYCE ROLLS ON: Helfrich was asked which player has impressed him the most since the end of last season through offseason workouts and the first half of spring drills. His pick was the running back who led the team with 1,365 yards and 18 touchdowns last year as a true freshman. “The guy that popped into my mind, which is weird, encouraging, and scary, is Royce Freeman,” Helfrich said. “Royce Freeman is pretty good, news flash. That guy just does everything right. I’ve challenged him to become more vocal. He’s in a long line of guys like Marcus (Mariota) and Hroniss (Grasu), unbelievable guys but too quiet for the overall greater good. Initiating more vocal leadership is something I have challenged him to do. He’s been phenomenal in practice.” By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Steve Mims Eugene Register-Guard Posted Apr. 14, 2015 at 8:46 PM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football 2015 Fantasy Outlook for Chargers' Stars Apr. 17, 2015 at 6:15 am Fantasy Outlook for Dolphins Stars Apr. 14, 2015 at 6:37 am Biggest Fantasy Winners, Losers in Free Agency Apr. 8, 2015 at 2:45 am Fantasy Football Outlook for Bears Stars Apr. 7, 2015 at 1:09 am RBs Ready to Break Out on New Teams Apr. 2, 2015 at 10:21 am Who Will Be QB1s with New Teams in 2015?
