Grants Pass boys notch 2-0 soccer triumph Sep 11, 1999 12:00 AM A A GRANTS PASS -- A solid defensive effort made a goal in each half stand up Friday as the Grants Pass boys soccer team opened its season with 2-0 non-conference victory over Eureka (Calif.) at Mel Ingram Field. Junior midfielder Andrew Purser connected on a 40-yard direct kick from the center of the field 14 minutes into the contest. I don't think the goalie thought Andrew could challenge him, Grants Pass coach Scott Gottula said. But Andrew looked him off a couple of directions and kicked it right over his head. Senior midfielder Joe Loomis scored from 12 yards out from the left side midway through the second half, taking a pass from Ian Erikson. Senior fullback Alann Garibay, junior sweeper Logan Cross and sophomore fullback Nevin Williams played critical roles in shutting out the Loggers. We had a good effort, but Like any first game we learned what we have to improve on, Gottula said. We were able to make mistakes able to do a lot of decent things. Eureka defeated Grants Pass' girls, 2-1.
