Flood watch issued for Sunday in Jackson County ... Illinois Valley student arrested for social-media threat Comment By Melissa McRobbie Grants Pass Daily Courier MailTribune.com By Melissa McRobbie Grants Pass Daily Courier Posted Oct. 30, 2015 at 3:50 PM By Melissa McRobbie Grants Pass Daily Courier Posted Oct. 30, 2015 at 3:50 PM » Social News An Illinois Valley High School student has been arrested because of a threat he made on the social-media site Snapchat. The student, a senior, was arrested Monday and taken to the juvenile detention facility in Roseburg. Josephine County rents three youth detention beds from Douglas County because its own juvenile lockup facility was shuttered amid budget cuts three years ago. Three Rivers School District Superintendent Dave Holmes said the threat involved a staff member, but he declined to discuss specifics. The threat didn't result in any lockdown at the school. In a message posted Monday on the Facebook site "Cave Junction & the Illinois Valley," the teen's father made a public apology for his son's actions. "As you may or may not know yet, our boy was cuffed and arrested for making serious threats at the school earlier today on social media and is currently sitting in a Douglas County jail in Roseburg awaiting arraignment tomorrow," he wrote. "Considering the terrible reality of recent events when it comes to violence on campus, this is no joking matter." He said his son is facing up to a year in jail and as much as $10,000 in fines. "My hope is that he will learn from this experience, realize the gravity of the situation, man up after paying his debt to society, search his heart, and offer his own apology. As his father, I believe he will," the post reads. The father said in a brief phone interview Wednesday that his son is back home and has been charged with a misdemeanor. "The next step is we have to go through the court system and then we're waiting for the school to decide if he's expelled or not," he said. Snapchat is a messaging app that allows users to send their friends photos, videos and text. The photos and videos, called "Snaps," disappear after 10 seconds. Earlier this month another Josephine County student, a 15-year-old Merlin boy who attends North Valley High School, was arrested after allegedly making threats toward law enforcement. Guns and body armor were found at that teen's home when he was taken into custody Oct. 6. He was charged with unlawful possession of body armor, unlawful use of a weapon and menacing, and remains in custody at the juvenile detention facility in Douglas County.
