SOU softball extends its win streak to 12 games by TIM PYLE ASHLAND - The Southern Oregon University softball team extended its win streak to a school-record 12 straight with 5-3 and 3-1 Cascade Conference victories over defending NAIA Region I champion Concordia University at University Field on Friday. The Raiders (24-4, 12-2) remained in sole possession of first place in the conference title chase but only after overcoming early deficits in both contests. The Cavaliers (7-17, 4-12) touched Raider ace pitcher Brandi Brown for eight hits and staked a 2-0 first-inning and a 3-2 third-inning leads in Game 1 before Southern took control with a three-run third frame. SOU's game-winning onslaught started with back-to-back RBI doubles by Brown and Angie Chaplin. Following a hit batter, junior Latisha Inget scored Chaplin from second on a single to left field. Brown then retired the final eight Cav batters for her league-best 21st victory of the season. Concordia led 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth in Game 2 when sophomore Lisa Aitchison led off with a double to deep center, and she scored moments later on an Inget double down the left field line. SOU took the lead for good later in the inning when Inget scored on a wild pitch by Cav freshman pitcher Jenny Johnson. Chaplin provided Southern with an insurance run in the fifth on an 230-foot home run to right-center, her team-best fifth dinger of the season. Freshman pitcher Seanna Doyel allowed only two hits in four innings to improve to 3-0 as a Raider starter, while Brown yielded only one hit over the final three frames for her first collegiate save. The wins allowed Southern Oregon to sweep the five-game season series against the Portland school. Southern Oregon, which won 11 straight games earlier this season, puts a four-game home skein on the line against league rival Eastern Oregon today at Noon. Women's Tennis REGION I TOURNAMENT - At Lewiston, Idaho, the Southern Oregon University women's tennis team battled to the end but came up on the short end of a 7-2 decision to University of Alberta at the Region I NAIA Tournament. The Raiders play Seattle University today at 9 a.m. in a consolation match. SOU dropped all three doubles matches and had several close singles' losses. Megan Loading and Lindsey Chrisman picked up the two SOU wins in singles. Loading outlasted Zuzuna Triska, 7-5, 6-4, while Chrisman downed Allison Twiss, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0. SINGLES - Shaira Somani, A, d.
