GOLF Barry fires back into SOGC finals By Kris Henry Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Kris Henry Mail Tribune Posted Sep. 1, 2014 @ 2:00 am By Kris Henry Mail Tribune Posted Sep. 1, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News Mike Barry is not one to show emotion when he’s on the golf course, but the easy-going Medford native couldn’t resist a couple outbursts Sunday in his challenging semifinal match at the Southern Oregon Golf Championships. Playing some of his best golf in a while, the former North Medford High and Oregon State University standout still found himself in a back-and-forth dogfight with 16-year-old newcomer Bryce Wortman at Rogue Valley Country Club. After his 6-iron approach shot on the par-3 15th hole stuck about 18 feet below the hole, Barry turned the momentum of the match in his favor with a pure birdie putt that dropped into the heart of the cup. As the ball fell out of sight, Barry couldn’t fight the urge for an animated fist-pump that surprised most of his dedicated followers in the crowd, as well as himself. “I don’t think I’ve ever fist-pumped in my life, but that felt really good,” said Barry. When Wortman’s birdie answer slid past the cup, Barry held a 1-up advantage that carried him through to the end, where he secured his victory by making another testy 15-footer to stave off Wortman that also came with a celebratory fist-pump. “It’s always fun to make a big putt and those were two really big putts for me,” said Barry, who conceded Wortman's final putt to halve the 18th and finish 1 up. The rare emotional outbursts were not only a testament of the big shots made by Barry, but also a testament to the challenge put forth by Wortman in his SOGC debut. The Mazama High junior was scintillating in his own right, shooting 5 under par on the front nine holes to go 2 up on the three-time champion Barry. When the match was complete, Barry immediately offered his congratulations to Wortman, then went back for a second go-round with the teenager to offer his praise for a match well played. “He’s got so much game, that’s probably as well as I could’ve played today and I barely snuck it out,” said Barry, 27. “I just told him to keep doing what he’s doing, he’s a heckuva player. I have nothing but good things to say about him. He’s really nice on the golf course and it’s obvious that he’s a good kid from a good family and he’s got a lot of potential in the game of golf. That’s all I tried to tell him.” For Wortman, there was a sense of doing all he really could during his semifinal round. “It was fun and to go out to a nice guy like Mike, it’s OK,” said Wortman, who vowed to return next year. “The first nine holes I think we had one bogey and 10 birdies between us or something crazy like that. If you have to go out, to go out like that is better because it doesn’t leave such a sour taste in your mouth.” “It’s hard to be mad when you’re 4 under in your round and get beat,” he added. “It happens, and you’ve gotta just take it and then go out next time and shoot 5 under or 6 under and try to get through.” That score may need to be a target for Barry today when he matches up with three-time defending SOGC champion Kevin Murphy. The current Oregon State standout from Rogue River was on top of his game and left no door open for Alex Street in their semifinal match, with Murphy eventually winning 3 and 2 after birdieing the 14th hole to go dormie. Street, who starred at St. Mary's High and was the 2013 RVCC club champion, preceded Barry's big putt on the 15th hole with a 25-footer of his own to extend the match. “I feel like my game’s better than ever, better than the last three years,” said Murphy, who was 4 under in his round. “I felt like I didn’t play great today but the score was plenty good I would say. I played my best on the back nine and that’s always better to do.” Barry and Murphy met in the men’s regular final in 2012, with Murphy making the most of the day for an 8 and 6 victory. Last year’s victory over Ryan Hawkins allowed Murphy to become the first to win three straight men’s championship flight titles in tournament history, so he’s obviously in rare territory when the duo begin their 36-hole match at 9:10 this morning. The second 18 holes, if necessary, begin at 2:50 p.m. “What I’m excited about is I feel like we’re both playing well,” said the 20-year-old Murphy of the finals pairing. “In the past I’ve felt like Mike hasn’t had everything kind of together but right now he’s putting well and seems to be playing close to his best. If we both play really good I think it’s going to be a lot of fun, and that’s what I look forward to. It’s not going to be a walk in the park, for sure.” Matching up again with Murphy would’ve been the hope for any golfer with a competitive spirit, and that’s exactly how Barry sees their matchup today. “That’s who you want to play in the finals after winning it three years in a row,” said Barry. “I feel like I need to play a little better than I did today to have a shot but I think it’s doable. I’ve just gotta get the putter rolling pretty early and stay on him as much as I can.” In Sunday’s other championship flight action, Medford’s Kevin Klabunde positioned himself for a potential third junior/senior title — and first since 1998 — with a 2 and 1 victory over Marty Morlan. Klabunde most recently won three straight senior men’s titles from 2009-11. His opponent today will be Steve Taormino of Grants Pass, who won 2 and 1 over Brent Barr. The 36-hole junior/senior final begins at 9 a.m., with the second 18 holes, if necessary, starting at 2:40 p.m. Hall of Fame PBA bowler Marshall Holman and fellow RVCC member Glen Clark each advanced to today’s senior men’s championship, with Holman winning 2 and 1 over Mike Finnell and Clark edging Brad Bills 1 up. The 18-hole senior men’s final begins at 2:20 p.m. Also competing today in the super senior men’s championship flight will be Terry Anderson and Dan Dixon, who tee off in their 18-hole final at 2:10 p.m. Anderson and Dixon secured their spots with wins Saturday.
