Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend May 16, 2005 Since You Asked Tips to cops can remain anonymous I saw a smashed-up car in my neighborhood that was parked with no license plates, and I left a message with the city code-enforcement office about it. The next morning, I saw a lot of flashing lights, and got up at about 6 a.m. to find a police officer out by the car. I told the officer what I had seen, and he asked me my date of birth. Since when is this required when you are trying to give information to an officer? I am a 54-year-old grandfather, and am sitting at home wondering what the officer is trying to dig up on me. I think from now on, I will close my curtains and not get involved! — Scott E., Medford We’ll try to help you relax about this, Scott. Medford police Lt. Tim George says officers appreciate alert citizens like yourself who report suspicious situations to law enforcement. Police try to obtain accurate information from complainants in order to confirm their identities, in case a person needs to be re-contacted during the course of an investigation. But George said innocent people who help police by reporting such instances are not required to provide their date of birth when an officer arrives at the scene. "He doesn’t have to give it if he doesn’t want to," George said. "We don’t want to discourage people from calling us."
