The senior-to-be at North Medford High was eliminated from the Oregon Golf Association tournament at Emerald Valley Golf Course with a 2-and-1 loss to Santiam’s Jeff Hartley in the junior boys (ages 16-17) round of 16. Grants Pass’ Jay Kirkwood and Roseburg’s Marc Goodell both advanced to the quarterfinal round of junior boys play. Kirkwood scored a 19th-hole victory over Tualatin’s Tate Stanaway, while Goodell took out Matt Uhle of Tigard, 5 and 4. In the girls ages 15-17 championship flight, Justine Hix of Grants Pass defeated Eugene’s Kendra Little, 3 and 2. Eagle Point’s Stephanie Graham fell to Amanda Jacobs of Portland, 4 and 3, while Graham’s twin sister, Elaina, dropped a 3-and-2 decision to Canby’s Breanne Smith. Medford’s Christian Bernard was eliminated in the intermediate boys (ages 12-13) with a 2-and-1 loss to Nicholas Chianello of Gresham, while Matthew Spivey, of Medford, notched a 1-up victory over Eugene’s Cole Weinhold to advance to the semifinals of the ages 8-11 pee wee boys division. Advertisement Barry trailed his match by two strokes early and reached the 17th hole knowing he’d have to take a chance to extend play. "I was down and needed to make something happen," said Barry. "I tried to fire at the pin, and it went over the green. "The wind was blowing into my face, so (the hole) played about 15 yards longer." Barry missed a tough chip shot for birdie, and Hartley sealed the win with his par putt. Wednesday’s match had a similar feel to Barry’s 2-up victory over Blaine Corkill on Tuesday. "I got behind by two holes yesterday, too," he said. "Today, I just couldn’t catch back up to (Hartley)." Barry is in the midst of a what is a busy summer schedule for the 17-year-old. He departs for Bluffton, S.C., to compete with three other U.S. players (ages 17-19) against four Canadian junior golfers in the North America Cup on July 6-9. The U.S. defeated Canada in last year’s inaugural event. Barry qualified for the Cup by winning the West Coast Mid-Season Championships at Gold Canyon Resort in Phoenix Jan. 31 to Feb. 1. Then, on July 13-16, he travels to San Diego for the Junior World Championships. It will be Barry’s third straight trip to the Junior Worlds. He finished 28th out of 205 competitors last summer.
