The detours for northbound and southbound travelers will be in effect from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. The estimated completion date for the bridge demolition is Friday, March 11, according to a news release from the Oregon Department of Transportation. All drivers will be directed to exit at Exit 24. Northbound drivers will be directed to either Pear Tree Lane or South Phoenix Road, then to Grove Road, then to North Phoenix Road before re-entering I-5 north. Southbound traffic will drive onto North Phoenix Road, then to Luman Road, then re-enter I-5 southbound. The bridge demolition work is part of the $72 million diverging diamond interchange project, which will be the first of its kind in the state. On such an interchange, vehicles approach the overpass in the right lane, which allows a free right turn onto the freeway. The lanes cross, allowing a free left turn onto the freeway headed the opposite direction, then cross back to put vehicles in the usual right-hand lanes as they continue on the road. Construction began at the interchange in 2014.
