Brown nabs third SOC singles title By JASON LEAVITT ASHLAND - North Medford's Jenny Brown has one more thing in mind besides a possible state title this tennis season: a rematch with Tara Livesay. Livesay, the defending state singles champion from Lakeridge, has ousted the junior each of the past two seasons at the state competition. Brown, who attends St. Mary's High, took one more step toward that rematch Saturday, helping the Black Tornado girls win their fourth straight Southern Oregon Conference district title. Brown wrapped up her third consecutive district singles title with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Roseburg's Stacey Wetmore. As a team, North Medford posted a total of 43 points, with Roseburg second at 34. "I wasn't going to settle for anything less than first," Brown said. "She (Wetmore) looked pretty good in the semis. I was able to play pretty good, though." The match of the day proved to be the doubles final, where Roseburg defending district champions Becky Correll and Elisa Tryon faced off with North's Leslie Schultz and Annie Chaney. North Medford took early command of the first set, getting the lead at 3-2. Schultz and Chaney were able to take advantage of Correll and Tryon's weak second serves and opened up with a 6-4 win. Roseburg turned the tables around, winning the second set by the same score (6-4). They capitalized on a combination of errors by Schultz and Chaney, including a number of double faults. The third and final set was a seesaw affair. North held a 5-4 lead and looked poised to win the deciding game. Instead, the teams split the next two and ended up in a tiebreaker. Correll and Tryon turned up the heat and jumped out to a 5-2 lead. Schultz had service, trying to pull her and Chaney back in. But her first serve ricocheted off Chaney's head, and the second one went into the net, giving Correll and Tryon the title. "The both of them played good matches," North coach Dale Jensen said. "The seeding was true to form, and so was the match. It was kind of tight." According to Jensen, the showing that Schultz and Chaney gave in the final and their record throughout the season should secure them a seeding in the top four at state. "They have played well all season, getting a lot of big wins," Jensen said. "They only lost to Roseburg in duals earlier in the year, so that shows they did pretty good. I am definitely going to push for a good seeding for them." The dual match Jensen referred to also came down to a third set tiebreaker. Priority on state seeding is determined by how players performed in the previous state tournaments. With her championship performance last year, Livesay will almost certainly be the No. 1 seed. "I'd like to see her be the No. 1 seed," said Jensen. "Of course, Jenny wants to win state, but I'm sure that she would also like to beat Livesay." Brown readily agreed. "Hopefully I will get to play her again because I would really like another chance," she said. "I lost to her in January, and I'd like to beat her before she goes off to college." In the consolation bracket, North Medford's Vanessa Barrus made up for an early exit in the first round when she defeated South Medford's Nicole Hoyal in the singles consolation final, 8-0. In the consolation doubles final, Roseburg dominated again when Amy Doriu and Sonu Allen combined to beat South Medford's Megan Lee and Emma Close, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3).
