Dunn II Born June 1, 1934, in Pittsburgh, Pa., Dr. James E. Dunn II passed away at his home in Ashland May 18, 2015, at the age of 80, after a long illness. Following his university education at Michigan State and Johns Hopkins, playing football for both, Jim received his MD from the University of Maryland School Of Medicine and trained in general surgery and neurosurgery at Duke University. He was a Fellow of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and of the American College of Surgeons. Over nine years of Air Force service included four years as a research physiologist in aerospace medicine working with astronaut teams. In the Air Force he rose to the rank of Major. After two highly successful years as director of the Shock Trauma Unit at the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medicine in Baltimore, he established his neurosurgical practice in the Rogue Valley in 1974. An innovator in neurosurgery and pain management, Jim started the first pain management clinic in southern Oregon in 1980 and was very influential in the non-surgical approach to spine and pain problems, as well as operating when needed. He continued to perform neurosurgery until his retirement in 2002, then became an expert witness in the legal arena, impartial in testifying for both plaintiff and defense. He enjoyed explaining and simplifying medical information for the jury. How can one describe Jim Dunn? Draftsman, contractor, logger, excavator, homebuilder, hunter, cook, inventor, world traveler, philosopher, mentor, car nut, farmer, risk taker, Rotary club president, outrageous lover of fun—he was larger than life in his interests and undertakings. He was fearless and outspoken, compassionate and loyal, always beloved by his patients even when he appeared on rounds with a bushy beard and mud on his boots. Inseparable from Linda, his wife of 30 years, more than anything else Jim loved his extended family and his friends. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his sons, James Edwin Dunn III (Karen), Scott Dunn (Amy), and Jon Edward Dunn; his daughter, Kimberly D. Brady (Eric); his sisters, Barbara Burtch and Dorothy Schuette; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Donations in Jim’s name may be made to The Rotary Foundation (c/o Rotary Club of Ashland, PO Box 511, Ashland OR 97520) or to the local Disabilities Recreation Project (www.drpinc.org). Family and friends are invited to an informal gathering from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2015 at the Dunn home.
