COLLEGE BASKETBALL Raiders get No. 10 Midland in first round Comment By SOU Sports Information MailTribune.com By SOU Sports Information Posted Mar. 4, 2015 at 8:04 PM By SOU Sports Information Posted Mar. 4, 2015 at 8:04 PM » Social News KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Last year's national runner-up, 10th-ranked Midland (Neb.), will be 21st-ranked Southern Oregon's first-round opponent when the NAIA Division II men's basketball tournament begins next week in Point Lookout, Mo. The bracket was released Wednesday night by the NAIA office. SOU (24-9) played its way into Tuesday's Cascade Conference championship game to climb two spots in Wednesday's final coaches' top-25 poll, thereby receiving the fifth of nine at-large spots in the 32-team field. The Raiders will be making their second tournament appearance in three years when they and the Warriors (26-7) tip off at approximately 11:45 a.m. Pacific Time next Thursday at Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks. The teams have not previously met. Midland didn't earn its first tournament win until 2013, when it advanced all the way to the quarterfinals. Last year the Warriors went to the championship game as the No. 10 seed. A 100-61 dismantling of 19th-ranked Robert Morris (Ill.) in the semifinals preceded a 78-68 loss to No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan in the final. This season, the Warriors were ranked 14th before knocking off then-No. 3 Dakota Wesleyan and No. 5 Morningside (Iowa) back-to-back on the road last week to win the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament. They'd finished third behind those teams with a 15-5 record during league play. The 1,300-person Fremont, Neb., school leads the nation in 3-point percentage (41.3), is fourth in turnover margin (4.3) and 14th in scoring (83.5). Six players on Midland's roster of 30 (yes, 30) are seniors. The SOU-Midland winner will take on either seventh-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) or 24th-ranked Grace (Ind.) at 11:45 a.m. PST in Friday's second round. The Raiders upset 14th-seeded Madonna (Mich.) in 2013's first round before losing to College of the Ozarks in the second. This is their fourth tournament appearance under Brian McDermott since 1999. They won their first two tourney games in 2005 but were defeated seconds away from the Final 4 by Cedarville (Ohio). SOU has five wins against ranked opponents this season, including four away from its home floor. Elsewhere in the Cascade Conference, College of Idaho landed the No. 4 seed and a matchup with Dakota State (S.D.); No. 14 Concordia drew No. 19 Indiana East; and No. 16 Warner Pacific got No. 17 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.). Each of those games will be played on Wednesday.
